THE NEVILLE BROTHERS / DR. JOHN

THE NEVILLE BROTHERS / DR. JOHN and the Lower 911
Tuesday, August 25th 7:30pm
at the Keswick Theatre

The Neville Brothers
The differences between the four Neville Brothers are as dramatic as the similarities that unite them. The source of the similarities is passionate funk, a feeling for blues-soaked deep pocket grooves that is the basis of their greatness and exalted place in our cultural history.
Art is the oldest. They call him Poppa Funk for a reason. He formed the first band. As both inspired singer and blistering keyboardist, his role models were Fats Domino and Bill Doggett. Art is the Founding Father. He still lives in the same Thirteenth Ward block of Valence Street where he and his siblings were raised in New Orleans.
Charles is a year younger than Art. His religions are bebop and Buddhism. His instrument is the saxophone. At fifteen, he was the first brother to leave home and hit the road, playing with everyone from the Rabbit Foot Minstrels to B.B.King. They called him "The Boy Wonder of Sax." He went to Memphis and returned home with a new stew of blues.

DR. JOHN
Dr. John, or Mac Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His very colorful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident forced the artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano.
Further trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison and Aretha Franklin to name a few. He also launched his solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John The Night Tripper. Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album Gris-gris, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots.

LOS LONELY BOYS

LOS LONELY BOYS
with special guests ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO and HACIENDA
Wednesday, October 7th 7:30pm
at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA

The essence of Forgiven, the gripping third album by Texas trio Los Lonely Boys? “Familia! That’s what I think it represents. Three brothers. True American spirit – or Texican spirit.”
It’s as simple as that, says guitarist Henry Garza of the artistic and emotional breakthrough achieved by him and his siblings, bass player Jojo and drummer Ringo Jr. From the bluesy groove of the opening song “Heart Won’t Tell a Lie” through the yearning plea of the title song, the heartfelt faith of “Love Don’t Care About Me” and a rollicking version of the Steve Winwood/Spencer Davis Group chestnut “I’m a Man,”
Los Lonely Boys has fully realized the potential shown as its first two studio albums, the multi-platinum 2003 debut Los Lonely Boys and 2006’s Sacred (a No. 2 arrival on the Billboard albums chart), made the Texas trio one of the most beloved and acclaimed new arrivals in rock. Each of the three reaches new levels in their playing and singing, Henry and Jojo alternating lead duties and all three joining in both the group musical dynamics and vocal harmonies that can only come with genetic bonds. And there are some new turns as well, including Ringo’s recording debut as a lead singer on the song “Superman.” Powered by passion and true brotherly love, Forgiven is in every note a rock ‘n’ roll classic.

PETER FRAMPTON

Thursday, August 27th 7:30pm
at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA

He was a British teen sensation with The Herd. He was a hard rock hero with Humble Pie. He was an international phenomenon with a solo career that included the release of the multi-platinum 1976 album, Frampton Comes Alive - arguably the most successful live recording of all time. He’s guitar legend Peter Frampton, and he’s lighting up the Keswick Theatre on Thursday, August 27, 2009.A mainstay on the rock scene since the late 1960s, Frampton has enjoyed a career full of accolades and 20 Top Ten hits including 1970s guitar anthems “Baby I Love Your Way,” “Do You Feel Like We Do,” and “Show Me the Way.” He is particularly proud, however, of his 2007 all instrumental album, Fingerprints, which earned Frampton his first Grammy Award for “Best Pop Instrumental Album.”
“I’ve never done a complete collection of instrumentals,” the Britain-born, Cincinnati-based Frampton says. “This is something I’ve been needing to do for myself for a long time. I wanted to play with people from all over the world, and I wanted to make the selections as diverse as possible. I didn’t want to make a smooth jazz album where the rhythm section plays the same on every tune.”
Fingerprints features Frampton having exhilarating musical conversations with a who’s who of the pop world, including Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Matt Cameron, original Shadows Hank Marvin and Brian Bennett, Allman Brothers/Gov’t Mule slide slinger Warren Haynes, Nashville pedal steel virtuoso Paul Franklin and gypsy guitar maestro John Jorgenson. Peter is currently working on the follow up to this Grammy Award winning album to be released in January 2010.

BOZ SCAGGS / MICHAEL MCDONALD

Friday June 26th 8:00pm
at The Mann Center in Philadelphia, PA
Boz Scaggs
To sing the Great American Songbook convincingly, it helps to believe in chance. All the legendary composers of standards – George and Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Harold Arlen, the list goes on – had something to say about life’s serendipities. Their songs are full of unexpected encounters, fine romances that blossom out of nowhere. Their wistful and often impossibly beautiful melodies convey the magic of happenstance and also its flipside, the capricious cruelty of fate. Their lyrics celebrate the notion that life can change in an instant – when that vision of loveliness steps out of a dream and you suddenly find yourself bewitched, bothered and bewildered.
Boz Scaggs believes in this sort of thing. You can tell that from the opening stanzas of ‘Speak Low,’ the sublime and sexy follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2003 standards collection ‘But Beautiful.’ Recorded in four days with the musicians playing live together in the same room, Speak Low oozes the spontaneous essence of a torch song. It’s romantic singing done casual and breezy – from the first notes, you sense that everyone involved is alive to the possibilities of the moment. At the same time, it’s a feast of carefully wrought moods – here’s Scaggs, owner of one of the most distinctive voices in popular music, singing sweet and low in the thick shadows. About the lover who, he discovered too late, was too good to be true.

Michael McDonald
"You just try to pick the songs that are most meaningful to you,” says five time Grammy-winner Michael McDonald about the inspiration for his new album, Soul Speak. “These songs span my life—they’re the ones where I can remember where I was when I first heard them, the ones that made me interested in becoming a recording artist, the songs I’d always imagined myself singing.”
Soul Speak is the natural follow-up to McDonald’s two smash explorations of the Motown Records songbook—the platinum-selling Motown from 2003, which was nominated for two Grammy awards, and the next year’s gold-selling Motown Two. But this time, McDonald didn’t restrict himself to any one style, record label or decade; he wanted to interpret songs that he loved, regardless of genre. So while some of the selections—“For Once in My Life,” “Walk on By,” or the album’s first single, “Love TKO”—fall squarely within the blue-eyed soul territory that we associate with Michael McDonald, others, like Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” or Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” are a bit more surprising.

ANI DIFRANCO

Thursday November 20th 8:30pm
at The Electric Factory in Philadelphia, PA
“I’ve got myself a new mantra,” Ani DiFranco shares on her new studio album. “It says ‘Don’t forget to have a good time.’” This attitude has clearly influenced the dozen tunes on Red Letter Year, which celebrates existence, professes love and tackles thorny political issues with an infectious sense of glee. It’s one of Ani’s most joyous records to date.
And it has been a long time coming. Red Letter Year was sculpted over the course of two years, a period in which Ani continued to hone her songwriting, performing and recording skills, all the while balancing her new role as a mom. “I think I sorely needed to be slowed down, and finally a little person came along powerful enough to do it,” Ani reflects. The end result is an album of focused, layered, panoramic music.
“When I listen to my new record, I hear a very relaxed me, which I think has been absent in a lot of my recorded canon,” Ani explains. “Now I feel like I’m in a really good place. My partner Mike Napolitano co-produced this record – my guitar and voice have never sounded better, and that’s because of him. I’ve got this great band and crew. And my baby, she teaches me how to just be in my skin, to do less and be more.”

THE GIPSY KINGS

Sunday June 7th 7:30pm
at The Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA
Over the years the Gipsy Kings—whose members hail from the gypsy settlements in Arles and Montpelier in the south of France—have included singers and guitarists from the Reyes (Canut, Nicolas, Pablo and Patchai) and Baliardo families (Diego, Paco and Tonino). Lead singer Nicolas Reyes is the son of famed Flamenco singer José Reyes, who, with Manitas de Plata, sold millions of records in the 1960s and 70s. The band’s vigorous guitar work and passionate vocals are the trademarks an indigenous musical tradition known as “rumba flamenca.”
There are no other examples of a non-English speaking band (the group’s language is the Gypsy dialect of gitane) with such a consistent winning streak in the U.S., where the group is the biggest-selling French act ever. Since the 1987 release of the international hit single “Bamboleo,” from their platinum-selling eponymous debut album, the Gipsy Kings have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than fourteen million albums worldwide—more than four million in the United States alone. Their platinum compilation, The Best of the Gipsy Kings, was on the charts for more than a year.
Albums such as the gold-certified Mosaique, Allegria, Este Mundo, Gipsy Kings Live, Love & Liberté, Tierra Gitana, Cantos de Amor, and Volare! The Very Best of the Gipsy Kings have provided a steady stream of hits to Billboard’s world music, Latin, and pop charts. The ensemble’s music has been used in numerous motion pictures, including Peter Weir’s “Fearless” and Joel and Ethan Coen’s “The Big Lebowski.”
Two PBS-TV specials have contributed to the Gipsy Kings’ ongoing success story. A documentary, “Tierra Gitana,” which aired on hundreds of public television stations in 1996, explores the band’s roots in gypsy culture and the members’ rich family heritage in flamenco music. Filmed in concert and in the Gypsy camps of Arles, “Tierra Gitana” provides a glimpse at the vanishing lifestyle of a vibrant traditional people. The hour-long film was released as a home video in December 1996. A second program, filmed in performance at Washington, DC’s Wolf Trap, captures the excitement of the band’s live show in a 60-minute special; it was broadcast on many PBS stations.
For the group’s most recent release, Roots, the core members of the Gipsy Kings settled into a stone villa in the small town of St-Andre-de-Bueges in the south of France, where they collaborated with producer Craig Street on the Grammy-nominated acoustic release, Roots. For the first time in years, the band recorded without a drum kit, synthesizer, or electric bass, bringing the music closer to its Flamenco origins. Billboard called the record a “treasure,” and People said, “Way beyond the strictures of language, these 16 songs will resonate with anyone who loves heartfelt, meticulously performed music.”

GUITARS AND SAXES 2009

Friday June 5th 8:00pm at
The Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA
In now it's phenomenal 14th running, the perennial smash-hit tour, Guitars and Saxes is returning to audiences with another fresh new feel for 2009, while holding on to what helped make 2008's tour such a success. Added to the 2008 veterans Jeff Golub, Jeff Lorber and Jessy J will be the popular Saxophonist with the funky stage name, Euge Groove!
This year's addition to the tour is none other than one of instrumental music's most dynamic live performers, Euge Groove. Euge has been around the world as a longtime veteran member of Tower of Power (1988-92) and sideman for superstars like Richard Marx, Joe Cocker and Tina Turner. His four previous albums since the release of this self titled debut in 2000 have brought him to the peak of the pop instrumental realm with a total of ten Top 5 Radio & Records singles. Five of these singles hit #1. His latest #1 in 2009, "Religify" is a soaring, feel good mid-tempo tenor driven song that's brimming with a churchy soul sound. His latest chart topping album, Born 2 Grooves, released in 2007 marks his fifth release in 7 years.
The G&S veteran, Jeff Golub's unique brand of funky, firm blues-drenched jazz is a mainstay on contemporary jazz radio and has more than proven to be one of the genre's most popular performers since the mid-'90s. His innovative guitar style transcends the genre's boundaries and Jeff's never-ending energy and spontaneity of his unforgettable live performances keep fans well entertained and yearning for more. Jeff's latest album, 2007's critically acclaimed, "Grand Central", marked his latest release and second with Narada/Blue Note.
Over three decades and breaking ground as leader of the pioneering Jeff Lorber Fusion, the Philly-born and bred composer, producer and keyboard legend, Jeff Lorber, is still keeping the vibes fresh and the grooves funky. To follow 2007's Grammy-Nominated He Had A Hat, Jeff's highly anticipated Peak Records debut Heard That keeps the soulful momentum going brilliantly with pop, jazz, R&B and blues influenced tracks. For Jeff, his live shows give nothing up and he is known for bringing crowds to their feet with his funky style and incredible solos.
Last but never least: returning this year is one of the hottest rising starts in the genre, Jessy J. Jessy was one of the most buzz-worthy saxophonists in 2008 and she has more than delivered. She has gone from recording and touring with such powerhouses as Michael Buble, Jessica Simpson, Burt Bacharach, Michael Bolton and The Temptations to releasing her own solo project, Tequila Moon, on Peak Records. Produced by Paul Brown, the album features the #1 hit single of the year, "Tequila Moon." The sexy and irresistible Jessy J won over countless fans last summer as part of the G&S 2008 band and as part of the package in 2009, along with Groove, Golub and Lorber, this will surely be one of the most exciting groups yet!

PATRIZIO BUANNE

Friday, May 15th 8:00pm at
The Keswick Theatre in Glenside PA
Since the release of his debut album, ”The Italian” in 2005, and his 2006 follow-up album “Forever Begins Tonight”, Patrizio Buanne has had impressive success across the globe.
Patrizio found himself the right team to record his vision and dream on (2) CD’s with the world's finest musicians (The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), in one of the most respected recording studios (Abbey Road), and after being signed and released by the biggest record company in the world (Universal Records) he has sold over one million albums worldwide which left a particular impression in the UK, Asia, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Outstanding sales that now take the albums in some of the mentioned countries to Triple Platinum status, resulting in sold-out tours that included unforgettable nights at the Sydney Opera House, the Explanative in Singapore, the Kennedy Centre in Washington and The Lincoln Centre in New York. He has also performed for such luminaries as the Pope, The Royal Family and the President Of The U nited States.
Patrizio has been called “the voice of romance” but his creamy baritone voice, seductive phrasing and onstage persona says a whole lot more.
Basically, he has taken an essence from his all-time favorite entertainers and re-invented that tradition. A new-school Crooning Entertainer. Or simply call it: PATRIZIO
He is only in his late twenties but his stage experience is that of an old soul professional who knows how to reunite three generations into one show. Once described as 'the dark suited Lothario who arrived on stage in an Estrogen-charged atmosphere like a match being dropped into a box of fireworks', there is no doubt that Patrizio Buanne has it. Charisma.
In fact, due to the great response and demand in the US market, Patrizio is spending a great deal of time in the US working on a new PBS special and, of course, a new CD. What is it that makes this young man winning over more and more people worldwide? As Frank Sinatra used to say “You can only be yourself, but you can be very good at it”.

Natalie Cole, the daughter of Nat King Cole and former Duke Ellington Orchestra singer Maria Hawkins Ellington Cole, is an influential American singer-songwriter and performer who has won ten Grammy Awards. FOREIGNER--2 Dates!

Thursday, April 30th 7:30 pm at
The Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA
***AND***
Thursday, May 7th 7:30 pm at
The Sovereign Performing Arts Center in Reading, PA

Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice,” “Urgent,” “I Want To Know What Love Is,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Hot Blooded,” 7 Top 5 hits, 9 Top 10s and 14 Top 20s help to define a career that has seen the sale of more than 70 million albums. Add to that countless other classics, “Say You Will,” “Jukebox Hero” and “Double Vision,” and you have a super group that has left an indelible mark on rock and roll history.
Formed in 1976, Foreigner is no stranger to meteoric global success. Since the release of their self-titled debut album, Foreigner has celebrated the success of 7 multi-platinum albums including the 6x platinum Double Vision, Foreigner 4, the 3x platinum Agent Provocateur, and Head Games; a spectacular three decade run that has assured the group a passport to superstardom, a Midas touch that has never failed them.
Foreigner's brand of a thrilling mix of blustery blues and impeccably crafted pop continues to captivate generation after generation of music fans. And the band is more powerful and explosive than ever.
“Our music has touched a lot of people worldwide,” attests Mick Jones, the band’s founder and legendary songwriter/guitarist. “Unwittingly, we've weaved into the fabric of people's lives and this new lineup is working extremely hard to live up to the high bar that was set years ago. This, is the most dynamic lineup that we’ve had since the early days,” adds Jones.
Garnering accolades from press and fans alike, Foreigner is led by founder/chief songwriter/guitarist/producer Mick Jones, lead vocalist Kelly Hansen, bassist Jeff Pilson, rhythm guitarist Tom Gimbel, keyboardist Michael Bluestein, and drummer Bryan Head.
“There are few times as a musician where you have an opportunity to play with a group of people that click so well,” explains lead vocalist Kelly Hansen. “We’re extremely fortunate that this is the case with this lineup.“
From New York City to the farthest reaches of South Africa, Foreigner continues to electrify a global fan base with their explosive live performances.
“We’ve performed hundreds of shows in dozens of countries on four continents,” marvels Hansen. “We play the songs as they should be played, even in places where Foreigner never performed, bringing with it a whole new vitality. It’s inspiring.”
In the winter of ‘07 alone, following their successful U.S. tour with Def Leppard, Foreigner’s travels took them to Scotland, Wales, South Africa, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, England, Switzerland, Hungary and Austria.
One of the band’s highlights came late last year on December 10th at London’s O2 Arena, where Foreigner took part in an incredible event performing with Atlantic Records label mates Led Zeppelin at a tribute concert honoring the late Ahmet Ertegun.
Drawing together over three decades of platinum music making, Foreigner’s audience appeal remains multi-generational. “It’s particularly gratifying to look out at our audiences to see teens and college age kids singing along,” attests Hansen. “But regardless of age, the praise coming from the fans has been unanimously positive. To see them having the fun that they’re having at our shows is what makes doing what we do worthwhile to us.”
Re-ignited interest in the band on a domestic and international level, isn’t just coming in the form of ticket sales. In fact, Foreigner’s release last year of a live DVD, Alive & Rockin’ which boosted sales of The Very Best… And Beyond, which was certified double platinum.
2008 has also been another banner year for the band, as they released No End In Sight. The album includes a brand new track called “Too Late” which has been extremely well received during their live performances, as well as being showcased on CBS TV’s “Early Show” and the top rated European TV Show, “Wetten Dass?”. Also included in the power packed compilation album, is the newly recorded version of “Say You Will,” which highlights the band’s unstoppable vocal talents. Stunning new live versions of “Starrider” and “Juke Box Hero” are also part of this very special collection.
The band’s vision for continuing to write, record and tour carries us into 2009 with the expected Summer release of a brand new album, and extensive touring in both Europe and the United States.
“I had no idea at the beginning what Foreigner would become,” said Jones. Back when we started the band, I was at a crossroads in my life, whether I was going to carry on in music or get a real job. So thirty years later, I think I made the right decision by following my true passion which is making music.”

The result was a rich, one-of-a-kind tapestry of samba and salsa, and bossa nova, all of which are held together by beautiful melodies of Kenny G's signature sound. The album is a collection of new songs and beloved classics that are rhythmically rooted in two disparate sounds resulting in a completely original and moving work.
When pressed about his theory as to why he has been so successful, Kenny offers, "I think my music gives people the opportunity to listen to their own thoughts. Tap into their imaginations. Create their own stories to songs without limitation of words...plus it's a really beautiful instrument."

Boz Scaggs is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. He gained fame in the 1970's with Several Top 20 Hits in the United States, along with his #2 album Silk Degrees.
Although Boz Scaggs is perhaps best known for his innovative white soul music during the 1970's. This versatile musician has recorded many other styles of music as well, ranging from rhythm and blues and folk to slick urban pop and disco. Born in Ohio, Scaggs moved with his family to Plano, Texas (a suburb of Dallas), when he was quite young. His interest in music was sparked by his childhood friendship with Steve Miller, with whom he attended St. Mark's Preparatory School in Dallas. Miller, who would grow up to front the highly successful Steve Miller Band, taught Scaggs the rudiments of guitar playing and encouraged him to sing.
Scaggs became the vocalist for The Steve Miller Band in 1959 and then again later in 1976. In between, he focused primarily on a solo career. In 1980 Scaggs released Middle Man which spawned two more top 20 hits. He continued to tour throughout the 80's and 90's and even opened a San Francisco nightclub called Slims. In 2004, he released a live CD and DVD. He tours each summer with a loyal cadre of fans and remains hugely popular in Japan.

Even with a prolific catalog of great albums to her credit, it has only been in the last decade or so that Etta has finally received the industry recognition long due to her. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993, Etta received her first Grammy in 1995 (after nine prior nominations) for her Private Music debut album, Mystery Lady: The Songs of Billie Holiday, a collection that introduced her extraordinary vocal pro wess to a new generation of fans. In 2003, she was honored with another Grammy for “Let’s Roll” as well as receiving a NARAS Lifetime Achievement award by the Recording Academy’s National Trustees, in recognition of her outstanding creative contributions that same year. In 2005, Etta won her third Grammy in the Traditional Blues Album category for Blues to the Bone, an outstanding collection of covers of tunes originated by blues greats such as Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, and Sonny Boy Williamson.
Now with ALL THE WAY, chock full of contemporary classics and time-honored standards and running the gamut from R&B chestnuts to show tunes, Etta James is ready for what she calls “the next adventure! You know, now that I’ve lost all the weight, I can stand up on the stage again like I used to after five years of sitting down while I sang. I look out at the audiences and I say, ‘how do all these young eyes who are looking at me know my music?’ The range goes from 17 and 18-year olds to some of those older folks, 50 to 70 who are in there hollerin’ away for me to sing one of my songs! ” Looking and sounding great, Etta James is justifiably proud as she declares, “This is one of the best records I’ve ever made!”
